Cranberry Research - Onset Muscle Soreness
cranberies

This study examined the whether or not the antioxidants in cranberry cocktail offered a protective effect against delayed onset muscle soreness.  Delayed onset muscle soreness, associated with physical trauma to the muscle, occurs within 24-72 hours of exercising.

Eleven students drank cranberry juice or a placebo prior to and 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours after completing 50 maximal eccentric arm extensions on a Biodex System-3 isokinetic dynamometer.  Data collected and analyzed included limb measurements (volume and girth), body composition, muscle soreness (as reported subjectively and via  a Punctate Tenderness Gauge) and blood analysis.

No significant differences were found between those who consumed cranberry cocktail and those who consumed the placebo.
