Academic Advising in the Residence Halls
Library

This Special Initiative Award pilot tested offering academic advising to first year and second year students in the evenings in the Residence Halls.  Five academic advisors set up advising stations in Lucas B10 and Lourdes 159 and offered advising services from 7-10 p.m. Tuesday and 7-11 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday during spring advising week (the week of April 16th, 2007).

During the 22 hours advisors were available they met with 21 students.  All had already met with their advisors, but had general questions on course choices and registration processes.

Feedback was positive.  Students agreed they received good information and that the time and location of the services was convenient.  Housing staff indicated they hoped the program could continue.

The academic advisors recommend continuing the program, focusing on increased promotion and visibility of services.  If staff used "flex time" to staff the evening hours, no additional resources would be needed to continue the project.
