Accomplishments of Early WSU Graduates in Argentina
Graham photo

This historical research project examined the pioneering efforts of a group of fifteen WSU graduates and staff who traveled to Argentina in the late 1800s to help establish a new educational system.

Establishing a public education system was the dream of the Argentina President Domingo Sarmiento, who believed the best way of doing so was through a Normal School system.  In less than two decades (1871-1888), 16 schools and kindergartens were organized across the country.  WSU graduate Mary O. Graham was considered a leader of the overall effort.  She worked in both San Jaun and La Plata.  The school established there in 1888 was renamed in her honor in 1926.

As a result of the research, WSU received numerous archival materials and is exploring the possibilities of organizing a travel study opportunity in Argentina.

A copy of the final report, "Conduct Historical Research about the Accomplishments in Argentina of Winona State University's Early Graduates for the 2008 Sesquicentennial Anniversary Celebrations," is available online.
