Campus Climate: Measurement and Analysis
hug

This SIA study measured the "campus climate" as perceived by students, faculty and staff at the Winona and Rochester campuses. The phrase campus climate refers to the degree individuals believe they are integrated into the community.

A sample size of 3,963 students responded. While results were positive, race/ethnicity was not correlated to the responses. Hence, most of the students responding were white. A post-survey focus group discussion with diverse students revealed feelings that racism and discrimination did exist on campus.

One survey finding was that relatively few individuals challenged inappropriate remarks. Educating individuals on how to respond might be a significant factor in improving the campus climate. The study suggested further research is needed to determine a method to track WSU's progress in becoming more inclusive and to identify significant problems. In addition, breakdown of Winona vs. Rochester results would be useful.
