Pilot Studies
The Planning Stage

From the 2004 Request for Proposals:

Winona State undertook an institution-wide, comprehensive study to define a "new university." The vision that emerged reaffirmed our mission and focused our dreams on creating a "Winona Experience" reflected in the blending of two cultures: the culture of learning and the culture of community. The culture of learning embraces experiential learning, learning through research and creative exploration, and out-of-the classroom experiences through such vehicles as partnerships, internships, study abroad, travel study and service learning. It values and promotes learning opportunities for students, faculty and staff. The culture of community focuses on "principles of community" that build committed relationships internally and externally epitomized by a dedication to giving and service. It is evident in such initiatives as increased cultural activities on campus, health and wellness opportunities, enhanced interdisciplinary experiences, Centers of Distinction, and growing living and learning communities.

These first exploratory studies under the "New U" and the "Winona Experience" were referred to as Pilot Studies and one applied for a Challenge Grant in order to conduct an exploratory study. The intent of the pilot studies was to prepare comprehensive implementation plans and/or strategies for initiatives that propeled The Winona Experience from vision to reality.

The following are short summary reports from2004-2005. The list reflects the variety of investigations that have been conducted. Several of these initial pilot studies have expanded or been merged into current initiatives that are being implemented..
