Assessment Day Information

Assessment Day 2009 is TUESDAY February 17th

Here's what you need to know and where you need to go!

NOTE:  All Classes that meet before 3:30 p.m. on Assessment Day are cancelled, EXCEPT labs or classes that meet once per week.  Individual instructors may choose to cancel those classes -- ask so you know!

All Students

  • Please log into the Assessment WWW page and fill out a survey telling us what you like about WSU and what we need to work on.
  • The survey will be available starting February 17th and be available for 10 days.
  • You can log in anytime -- day or night -- starting February 17th.
  • Use the Student Surveys link on this page.
  • The survey will take you about 20-25 minutes to complete.
  • For best performance, we recommend you plug your computer in to the wired network. The wireless network may periodically drop your connection.

Students who have COMPLETED between 45-70 credits:

Check-in between10 am - 10:30 a.m. University Studies Exam

  • Report to Minne Hall between 10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. to take the Exam.
  • The exam will take about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
  • There will be door prizes and $50 cash awards for the students who score in the top percentiles on the exam.
  • Bring your WSU ID, pencil, black pen, and a calculator! (You will not be allowed to take the exam without your ID!)
  • SPECIAL INCENTIVE FOR THOSE STUDENTS TAKING THE EXAM: *** Students who take the general education exam will be able to REGISTER EARLY for fall semester during a special “advantage” registration day. This will allow students who have completed the gen ed exam to register before other students who have between 45-70 credits who chose not to take the exam.
  • If you qualified for the exam last year and still have earned less than 70 credits, you are eligible to take the exam again. There are five different test modules, so it is likely you will not have the same ones you completed last year.
  • If you will not have earned 45 credits by February 17, 2009, but are expecting to reach the 45 credit point by March 1st (for instance, you are awaiting transfer credits or an 'incomplete' to change to a grade), you can still take the exam. However, unless you have actually reached 45 earned credits by March 1st, 2009, you will not be eligible to participate in the Advantage Registration period for Fall Semester.

Selected First Year Students and Seniors:

Selected first year students and selected seniors will be invited to participate in The Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency.   The exam will take 90 minutes to complete.  Students who have been selected to take the exam will be notified by email and asked to RSVP prior to Assessment Day.

All Students :

A bunch of academic departments have activities planned for their majors. Check with your major advisor or the Department Chairperson to find out what's going on in your department!!

Academic Departments will announce where they will be meeting with their students. Ask one of your professors!

Why are we doing this?

Assessment Day is a way for us to identify what we're doing well, and figure out what we need to work on to improve. It is a chance for Winona State to find out what you are thinking and feeling about WSU and also how you are doing in general education and your major. Some activities will allow us compare WSU students to students across the country. Activities in your major will allow your home department a chance to assess how well they're doing in helping you understand the core concepts and develop the essential skills of your field. Assessment Day is just one more thing that Winona State is doing to build a  Culture of Assessment on campus --where we continually look to see how we're doing and on what we need to improve.

We'll let you know what we find out -- and what we're going to do to try to improve!
