Survey of Opinions and Reasons on a Possible Name Change for Winona State University

In September 1998, the State Board of Governors passed a motion requiring each of the state universities to examine the issue of changing its name. Winona State University has responded by asking its Long Range Planning Committee to study the issue.  The committee would like to include you in this process.

Please answer the following questions and submit them by March 1st to Dr. Susan Hatfield, Co-Chairperson of the Long Range Planning Committee, Somsen Hall 211, Winona State University, Winona, MN  55987.  You may also e-mail your responses to Opinions@winona.edu

It is important to remember that WSU may chose to consider ANY new name for the university that we would like. We do not have to select a "Minnesota State University" name like Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The committee is particularly interested in the reasons you think a name change would be beneficial or not beneficial for WSU.  If you have any suggested names, we would like to know those as well.  Thanks very much for your assistance.

What is your relationship to Winona State?

1.  Why do you believe WSU should or should not change its name?  (Please include as many reasons as you can)

2.  If you would like to see WSU change its name, what name would you like to see as a replacement?  You may suggest more than one.

Thank you for answering these questions.  The committee will issue a report in May, 1999 after researching the question in the national literature and carefully considering the information submitted.
