I don't theink the name should be changed. Our school is recognized as Winona State university which makes is uniqe. If the name is changed, it takes away from the originality of our school, just like the UW system. All the schools are percepted as the same except fpr Madison becasue if its size.

I am a junior currently attending Winona State University. I do not believe that Winona should change it's name because it would take away the individuality of our school. We are part of MnSCU but other than that, we are our own college. Some people may get the idea that we are a branch off of other colleges. If anything, I would change it to--Winona State University of Minnesota. That way, Winona is still taking the prominent place in our name but at the same time we are known for being from Minnesota.

It should not be changed because all it has been known for under this name and it should not be combined into the rest of the Minnesota state school by putting Minnesota State University before the name Winona State University. I don't think it is necessary that Winona State needs to change its name to University of Minneosta - Winona. The way the name is stated now is just fine. But I guess I can see one reason why the school should change its name to U of M - Winona. It promotes the fact that WSU is a part of the biggest university in MN. People will realize that the schools are "sisters". Also, WSU will become more well-known.

I like Winona State University as our name and don't think it is necessary to change it. -i do so hope that this is an acceptable way of responding, for it is far more convennient to me than trying to locate an office or anything like that.

i am a student (i belive that the this is a very good reason, this is why i have included it) Winona State University is a unique version of the state university system, I feel the University should be proud of that and leave it as is. ifeel that by changing it's name to a "university of minnesota- winona" type university, WSU becomes merely a drop in the glass if you will. there are a great deal of "U of M's", but only one "Winona State" also, when people think of a U of M, they think of large campuses, with impersonnal classrooms and lots of students. on of the main reasons i came to WSU was to be away from all that. WSU is a relatively small campus, where you've got a really good chance of passing someone you know on the sidewalk on the way to class, and running into a lunch buddy, even if you hadn't planned it.

I feel that WSU should keep its name as it is. It is a significant name to this small town and we should be proud that there is only one Winona State. However, if it were to change to MSU Winona, this would definitely sound more 'prestigious'- Minnesota State Uni. People would also know the location of the uni.

I think that the name should remain WSU because:
- there's really no reason to change it
- "Winona State University" says exactly what it needs to in as few words as possible
- we would have to get all new signs
- it would create a lot of confusion (look at all of the confusion created over our school colors)

I beleive Winona State should keep its name because it is original. Wisconsin schools have no originality to it and I enjoy being from a school that isn't always associated with the the states school systems. Plus there are no reasons that a change would benefit the school. All it would do is associate us with all the other Minnesota schools and have no seperation. Winona State would be judged by the performance of other schools. As for the reason of gathering students from a larger region by having a more prominent name. I beleive the name has little to do with that. It is the schools own reputation which gathers students. I am from Illinois and more and more students every year from Illinois are getting word of WSU. The reputation is building and I beleive leaving the name as is would be the best possible solution.

I do not think WSU should change its name. I think Winona State University is a very catchy name and it's short and "to the point". I believe changing the name is a bad idea . . . the new name simply sounds dumb. If someone asked me what college I attend, I want to say "Winona State", not a mouth full of words that people can so easily tune out. I like the way Winona State sounds . . . why change it? Do we need to prove ourselves to any other colleges-that we can also change our school's name. This reason sounds childish. I find no reson for the school to change its current name.

I think that the money that would be used to change it's name chould be used for more resourceful things, such as updating our books in the library, or creating better workout facilities that is open to all students (not just better facilities in the dorms).

I think that it is wrong to change the name of a university after people have gone here. Alumni do not have a college to say that they graduated from. It is harder to get job recognition at a place of business or while trying to get a job if the university changes it's name. I think that people have come here decidedly for what Winona State has to offer and I would rather go to another school than be a part of this school if it changed it's name.

Here is my reply.
I am a student at Winona State University. I think that it would be a waste of money to change the name of our school. It is not necessary to use money for this. I think that the money would be better spent on modernizing the campus. I think that Minne, Pastuer etc., all the buildings except Stark need work. I don't want to sound like I am ripping the school appart because I am Not, I love it here, and I am confident that my education is just as good as the next guys. But, I think that money is wasted all of the time and I really don't think a name change would help to attract students as much as a more modern campus would. I also think that if we had a parking ramp and some fun activities (springfest) to attract students, the school would be more likely to attract more students from the midwest. I don't like the idea of changing the name just to be associated with Minnesota.

What I would most like to know is why WSU would cosider a name change. How does it benefit the student in any way? Also, if I attended WSU for the sake of it's name, and I am in the middle of a program, does the name change affect the name on my degree? Or will I still graduate from WSU, the program and college I chose to attend. How much money is it going to cost the student to make this change? How is my tuition going to be affected? Will I be expected to pay for the name changes on signs, equipment, stationary, etc? I guess that I am currently leaning more towards the feeling that Winona State University is fine for a name. I would need to have more information on this issue before I could make a final, educated decision. However, thank you for taking the time to ask me my opinion!

i think our name makes us original and doesn't group us together with the rest of the MN state schools. it gives us our own individuality and something to be proud of.
another little side note...i, along with a large portion of the student body, have spent quite a large sum of money purchasing Winona State University items at our wonderful overpriced bookstore. i would hate to see these things outdated by an unnecessary name change.

winona state has had this name for quite some time now...... I had to go through the same ordeal with my junior high school when they changed its name...get this we were called the stillwater 'colts' in junior high school, then when we got to be in senior high we were called the stillwater 'ponies' (makes sense) well they ended up changing our junior high name to the stillwater 'eagles' which makes no sense at all.....most people that i talked to in stillwater, ( I wrote an article in the newspaper) were outraged about the new name... Dont get me wrong I like alittle bit of change, but hay your taking a part of history away for many and the winona state warrior is part of our history winona state university ( what a name what a history ) no change not now not ever.........

Or should appeal to potential students because of excellence in academics and a committment to its students. Further, I am sure that changing the name of a university is a very expensive procedure. I believe that the title we currently use does not give the impression of being a state funded university. Some people consider the advantages to having that association as being benificial. They include lower tuition a higher degree of funding and a good faculty. I believe wsu has all of these but they could be better recognized by someone if the affiliation was clearer and mentioned in the title of the school

Does Minnesota State University--Mankato think that by changing their name, they have some connection to the University of Minnesota? Frankly, I think this is an issue brought up by some high-paying administrator with a lot of time on his/her hands. The weekly meeting was coming up and he/she had to put something on the agenda. Winona State University is the oldest state university in Minnesota. We have a lot of pride in our school. I don't really think that a name change would benifit the school. As far as a name change adding a location to the school, I really don't feel that that is nessasary. If someone doesn't know where WSU is located and would really like to know, they can ask or look it up. I don't feel that a name change is the right thing for Winona State University! Personally I like WSU, but changing it to something like University of Minnesota, Winona would probably make it more recognizable. For instance at a job interview......you could say I graduated from Winona State University, or you could say I graduated from University of Minnesota, Winona. The second one will be more recognizable, and it may have a bigger influence on getting the job.
Changing the name will cost us. By changing it, all the signs, brochures, paperwork, t-shirts, athletic uniforms, etc..... will have to be changed. In the long run, that will cost a lot of money.

Because I read in "Business Weekly" or some other prominent periodical that winona state is ranked 25th in the midwest (including the larger schools in the area). Now, if you change the name, no one will know where to go. They'll say "where's that 'Winona State'?"

I am (name) as you know from my address and I graduated from Winona Dec. 18 with a marketing degree. When reading the email you sent me only one thought comes to mind. What I have learned from my professors is that a name creates an image. With the name comes logos and possibly a new mascot for sport teams to name just a couple. It is my thought that the name of this institution should change only if the administration is looking to change its image. If there are no problems with the existing image, do not change the name. Alumni may lose their identification with this university if the name changes. Tradition is held at very high regards, especially when the name has been established for a long period of time. Many students have received degrees from this university and are proud that they attended this university. I know I am very proud to have received my higher education here. In conclusion, the name should be changed only if the image needs to be changed. Goals should be set forth for the future of this university. These goals should consist of admission levels, alumni support, among many other things. Goals should be set forth and then the means to get there should be established. I am a second year student at WSU, and an Engineering major. Frankly, I could give a rat's ass about a name change. Maybe if you could give me a good reason why our name should change I would think about it, but right now I can't think of one thing that could come out of it that would be overall beneficial to myself and my fellow students. All it would cause is an expensive pain in the butt with having to change names on stationary, vehicles, buildings, etc. Other than that, what would it do for us? If you can answer that question for me, I would really appreciate it before my hard earned $$ get spent on something completely superficial. Who cares what the school is called? I think we're doing just fine with the name we have now? I'd have to go with the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

I guess as far as I'm concerned anyone that plans to attend WSU knows that it is in Minnesota. By changing it's name to say Minnesota State University Winona or anything else isn't going to draw enough students to warrent the change in the name.
The majority of our students are from the surrounding states and it's really always been that way. People come to WSU because of the programs not because of the name. If someone wants to go into elementary education or nursing or any other program they look at which schools have the better programs and use that to choose where they go.

Our first option would be to not change it at all. Not changing it has obvious positives. If we were to change our name it should one of the following Minnesota State University-Winona
Or better yet, since there had been discussion about the University of Minnesota expanding to Rochester, University of Minnesota-Winona. Then we would be similar to all of the University of Wisconsin Schools.

I think that it isn't necessary to change the name of WSU. After all, we should be proud of the tradition this name carries. I can't see how could change the name would benefit the school. It would cost a great deal of money to change all the signs and all of the insignia of the school. There would also be confusion eventhough shortlived about the what the school was and it may deter students. It would be better to invest the money that would be spent in changing the name for programs as student retention, classes or other programs that could benefit campus.
