Winona State University should not change it's name. The reason that it shouldn't is because then you are throwing years of history away with the name change. What that basically says to me is that you don't care to make the university better by working at it, but you would rather spend money on new mascot material and paper work figure heads then on the student body. If you want Winona to be known around the state get better educators then the other colleges, be moe competitive in sports, and most of all do the best that you can for the students every second of everyday. It's not hard to do and a name change won't make this university any better or more well known. Think hard and you will see that there is no reason to change this universities name because nothing will come from it. The founders named it Winona State University because they took pride in Winona and wanted to show the state how good this city was. Changing the name will only disgrace all that they ever intended and wanted.

I'm a student (junior status). I've noticed the idea of changing the names of the MSUSA to Minnesota State University(MSU)-Winona. I think this is not the best interest for the school. By changing the name to a more state accepted university title, I think it reduces the amount of diversity that the school has over the other MSUSA unversities. Stay distinctive is cool. I like the idea of staying the same is good for me. Otherwise, make WSU unaffiliated with the MNSCU Board there for the unversity could fund whatever we need without waiting in line for money from the governor.

WSU should not change it's name! Winona is a beautiful city and it's part of the reason people want to come to this school. WSU is known for it's amazing bluffs and changing the name would be changing what this school is identified by. 1. I really don't see how a name change will benifit Winona State. In fact, I think it will just create confusion. I think the name "Winona State University" is completely becoming of this institution. Frankly, this whole name-change issue seems like a big waste of time and talent--there are plenty of more pressing problems I think the administration should be concerned about. 2. Keep the name.

I am a student here at Winona State University. I believe that Winona State should keep its name. I like how we have our own identity. I would not want to be something like University of Minnesota, Winona. I think along with changing our name we would have to look at replacing a lot of materials. These would include pamphlets, uniforms, signs and many more. It would be as confusing as our school colors for example. Our cheerleaders and dance line are purple and the team uniforms are blue. I am a student at Winona State. I strongly feel that WSU should definitely not change its name. I feel that there is really no need for it. I am an international student from Bangladesh. I would be happy to share a few of my own aspects concerning changing mane of WSU. Well, there were so many times i was asked by a lot of people where my school was located at. I am not talking about people from East orWest coast. Unfortunately, most of those people were from cities either in Minneapolis or St.Paul. The main reasons behind not knowing the school mane are following through my eyes: Actually, our school name is made by the place it is located at. It is a pretty normal circumstance that it is not possible to know mamy places around us. Since it goes by the name of it's location, many people don't even hear anything about our school. The suggestion i can make toward changing name of the school is simply as that name can be changed to Minnesota State University at Winona. When a person goes to hunt for a better school randomly in any particular state, he or she likes to go by, (for example), either" University of Minnesota" or "Minnesota State University" or suppose, "University of Florida" or "Florida State University", unless he or she has any specific intention to go at any school. People like to remenber easy as well as most commonly use name. In this sense, mamy people do know the name of all States rather than name of thousands of areas in any state. That is why, sometimes i believe that our school name is needed to be changed to" Minnesota State University at Winona", in order to make it a lot easier to people to get used to with our school. What is the point of changing the name. This is a state university located in Winona, Minnesota. The name makes sense. People are familiar with our school and our programs. People have known WSU as Winona State University or Winona State College for years now and changing our name would ruin the association people from out of town have with our school. Not to mention all the changes that would have to be made. The school would need new signs, a new logo, all faculty's business cards would need to be changed, all of our letterhead redone... the financial costs alone don't justify such a superficial act. I can see changing the name of the school if the name of the town changed or some other odd occurence. I suppose the main reason for changing the name would be that we claim (and aim) to have an academic reputation that extends beyond the original service region. Hence, a less region-specific name might be more useful. If Northeast Missouri State U. is one of the models we have for our evolving mission, consider what they did, a name change using one of the favorite sons of Missouri. I think that was a brilliant move myself. Unfortunately, we don't have a favorite son in Minnesota famous or beloved enough that we can use. Humphrey University does not seem to cut it - aside from the fact that he had nothing to do with us. While I love our town of Winona, the drawback in using the name if we want to go bigger time is that nobody really knows Winona as a place and in fact for some (or many outside of this area) Winona is kind of a hick name. I don't know if we can prove or disprove this assertion but I wonder how many reviewers of larger and more prestigious funding agencies look at a proposal coming from Winona and immediately deduct points in their own mind just because of the name. Again, I am not asserting this to be true. I am just wondering. Will a name change have a long-lasting effect? My feeling is that if we don't have the product to back it up, it won't matter what we name ourselves. On the other hand, I can't help but wonder if, provided we have a good product to sell, a name change wouldn't help. One wonders why corporations spend inordinate sums on market research just to come up with product names. As for a name, I would throw in something like the University of Southern Minnesota - although I suppose the Gophers would kill us if we did that. I do not believe Winona State University should change its name. WSU is known as the first "normal" school and teachers' college west of the Mississippi River. I believe if WSU is renamed, some of that identity will be lost. Why change the name if the university will remain the same? Also, I cannot believe the Board of Governors passed a motion for the state universities to examine the issue of changing names. I am a junior at Winona State University majoring in Criminal Justice. In regards to the proposed name change, I think that our name should be changed to the University of Minnesota at Winona. The reason I believe this name change should take place is for the ease of recognition it would establish outside the midwest. When I apply for a job in another state or region of the United States it would be easier to understand where Winona is and the good educational system it is a part of if the word Minnesota is in its' title. I am a student: Don't change the name. The tradition that comes from keeping WSU is much more important than wasting time and money on a new name. All the expenses from changing letterheads to signs to establishing a new name should be spent on the students. Lower the book costs or get more computers. If the name changes then what, I go to blank...blank school, you know the old WSU. you will always have to clarify where you came from. I don't want to say that I started at WSU and I want to graduate from WSU.

Please consider keeping the name Winona State University. As a graduate student who completed my undergraduate degree at WSU, I would like the continuity of the University's name staying the same. Also, I think the name probably reflects the Native American tribes that used to live in the area, although I am not sure of the origin of the name. I think there is too much random change taking place in our lives today, and that something is lost when we lack historical connections to buildings, institutions, families, etc. I vote to keep the name the same.

I think name changes are expensive and difficult for alumni that no longer live near here. They would not be aware of the changes and can look confusing to potential employers or colleagues. My daughter is considering Illinois State which confuses people who think I mean Illnois, the Big Ten school. I have worked at hospitals and government agencies who have changed their names. I have had potential contacts question my credentials because they did or didnot know of the change. Life is complicated why make it harder. (name)

Anyway, change WSU's name and more than a few ALUMS will be ticked, some of them even donate $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to WSU. Yes, the school's name has been changed before, from the normal school name, the teacher's college name. The purpose those changes seemed to indicate a different mission for the institution. I do not really see the need for a namechange at wsu! I am a junior, and came here because it was close to my home (i commute). i did not come here because it was a mn college or because it was a state college. What is wrong with WSU---that is very clear and has a rhythm to it. I'm a senior Mass communications major I think that a name signifies not only a location but also a reputation. If the University wants to be known as a long term institution rather than a transient organization, keeping the same name will facilitate this. When was the last time Harvard changed its name? I think that Winona State University conveys the fact that we are part of the state system, that we are located in Winona, and that we take pride in being classified as a University. It's plain, simple, honest, and blunt. It's not flowery or superficial. It's a name that has appeared on paperwork for many years and has many allumni who will continue to refer to it by WSU long after a possible name change goes through. I got married this summer, and the importance of a name has been driven home to me again and again. I took my husband's name, in effect loosing my own. People thought the newspaper I worked on had hired a new person. Family forgot and continued to use my maiden name. Teachers shook their heads in confusion. Old friends forgot to move me within their address book. Long lost friends can no longer look me up in the phone book since they don't know my new name. I have to create a new reputation for myself. I see no reason to change it unless we have a mission statement that reflects the change. Our current mission statement makes no mention of us being a "state" university, which I think is acceptable and in our best interest. There doesn't seem to be a "family" of institutions in the MnSCU system the way that many other states operate. Therefore, I would reject the notion that we change our name to "Minnesota State University at Winona." This takes away our unique character. Change for the sake of change is a waste of time and money. A name change omitting the "State" portion of WSU might be more logical given our mission statement. I don't suppose that would fly with MnSCU - at present, I don't have any suggestions for a name change.

I am a student here. I mostly wonder why WSU would want to change it's name. What are the benefits of a name change? Is it so bad to leave well enough alone? I prefer that WSU leave it's name the way that it is, for a few reasons. Ever since I have been aware of the college, it has been called Winona State University. I began school here by attending WSU, and I want to (plan to) graduate from WSU. It is an established name, one that people recognize immediately for the most part. I guess my biggest question is as above: if WSU is to change it's name, why? What is the pro in doing so? Also, what are some of the more prominant choices for new names? Winona State University should not change its name to Minnesota State University-Winona because #1 the expense to change everything that currently says WSU to MSU-W would be very costly. #2 WSU would loose its identity and be lost into a State Systemized naming of its colleges. #3 WSU has been WSU for many years now and it has been doing just fine that way.

I really don't believe that Winona State University needs to change its name. The thought of this actually baffels me. Why do we need to change the name? What is the point of this name change? What is the cost of this name change, and by this I mean loss of recognition to possible future students and a monatary cost? If a person stops to think about this, there are signs to be changed and even more importantly all of the literature surrounding the school will also have to be changed. Why doesn't this school work on improving something more important, something that actually effects students. For example, I have lived in the residence halls for the past two years of school. Has the administration and the state government been thru the dorms? If they saw how we live, and if they were to live in a dorm for a week, they would be appauld. The walls are too thin, studying is impossible, living that close to people is insane. Another example is the food service on campus. I realize that Armarks contract is up this year and I have been working on hall council for improving the food service. Would the state consider giveing the university money for better food service? I realize that these two examples are not really directly answering your questions, but to put it plain english, look at something that the university really needs to improve for the students. The students are what make the university what it is, do something for the students, they are the clients. In my job, if we didn't work for the clients, we wouldn't have them. I'm sorry if this doesn't answer your questions but this is the way that I feel and I belive other students would feel the same.

I believe that WSU should change its name because I think that employers may not recognize any school that has a small city as the basis of its name as a large school. I think that sounding as large as possible makes a school sound more important to somebody who does not have any knowledge of our school. I really only have one reason why we should or should not change the name of our university. That reason is why change something that has nothing wrong with it. It is important to maintain some sort of identity when building and maintaining a school image. First and foremost in these consideration is the title of the establishment. I am a student at WSU. The name Winona State University is just fine the way it is. I like a name that tells me where the University is located. This University has been along the bluffs of the Mississippi for many years. To have the unique name of its location is very nice, I believe. I do not know the purpose of the legislature asking for a review of the names. Could it be that the legislature did a blanket coverage of all schools in the state because of the complaint from some Indian groups that using names from Indian history was not appreciated? Winona is an Indian name, I believe. The name of the city is Winona. It would seem OK to me to use the name Winona State University. The name Winona State University has a nice sound. The name Winona State University help locate the University by geography. Using the name Minnesota State University Winona also helps locate the university in Minnesota and Winona, but really serves no other useful purpose. Having the name Minnesota in the name probably would discourage some parents and potential students from even considering going to a cold climate. No, we do not need to always follow everyone else's lead. What is wrong with our current name? Winona State University stands out a lot better than University of Minnesota, Winona or MSU, Winona. The only benefit is having it state the state in which the university is located. At least that is a conversation opener. What about all those people who bought WSU clothing items and with a name change ... wouldn't even really make sense to wander around with those now would it .... at least, I wouldn't. Granted, it is not a strong point, but given a large enough fulcrum, one could move the world. graduate student and TA I'm divided on the issue. WSU is already a recognized name and maintaining it would preserve its distinctiveness. If it were to change, I'd prefer to see the names "Minnesota" and "State" in there to give us unity and a clear association with the other state schools (if that is what is desired).
