WSU Athletic Training

The Athletic Training major is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). In addition to the academic coursework requirements, students must complete clinical education experiences and fieldwork experiences through required clinical coursework. Students who complete the clinical education and academic requirements of the major are eligible for national certification through the Board of Certification (BOC).

A joint statement (PDF) from the Strategic Alliance (NATA, CAATE, BOC and NATA Foundation) in May 2015 announced that the professional degree requirement in Athletic Training will move from a Bachelor's degree preparation to a Master's degree. The Winona State University Athletic Training Program is currently proposing a 3+2 educational model for future athletic trainers. Students attending WSU would complete three years of preparatory classwork at the bachelor's level and, upon admission to the professional phase of the program, complete a two year graduate level degree in Athletic Training. A two year Master of Science program for students who have already completed their undergraduate degree will also be available. Specific information regarding this transition and course requirements will be made available as soon as possible.

Please note: Fall 2016 will be the final entering class of freshmen who will be eligible for admission into the Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training. The final admission process into the Bachelor of Science-Athletic Training degree program will occur during the Fall 2017 semester.

Students interested in majoring in Athletic Training must apply to the program, participate in a competitive selection process and adhere to published retention guidelines. Watch a video describing the WSU Athletic Training Program!
