WSU Athletic Training Education Program

Courses

Athletic Training Majors at Winona State University take specific athletic training education courses while building on the foundation courses of:
  • Anatomy
• Physiology
• Kinesiology
• Exercise physiology
• Nutrition
• Mechanical kinesiology
 
These courses expose ATEP students to CAATE competencies and proficiencies in such areas as:
  • Injury prevention
• Recognition
• Evaluation
• Treatment
• Rehabilitation

Clinical Experience

WSU Athletic Training students must acquire clinical experiences over a minimum of two calendar years as assigned by the Program Director.

These experiences will be on a rotation as described in the WSU Athletic Training Handbook and be acquired at a variety of settings that include experiences with:
  • Protective Equipment Sports
• Gender Specific Sports
• Varying Levels of Risk
• General Medical

These experiences will be under the direct supervision of several Certified Athletic Trainers and other types of health care providers. However, the majority of the student's clinical experiences will be at WSU in a traditional athletic training setting.

Clinical Observation

Winona Health provides Athletic Training students with clinical observation opportunities in physician specialty areas along with other clinical experiences within the emergency department, urgent care, surgery, radiology and rehabilitative services. Specialty areas include:
  • Orthopedics
• Dermatology
• Family practice
• Internal medicine
• Pediatrics
Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Clinic also provides Athletic Training students with clinical observations with sports medicine physicians and staff in the clinic setting and in surgical observations.
