Applied Lessons are intended for undergraduate clarinet students majoring or minoring
in music. The lessons are directed toward developing competencies and understandings that will
contribute to the goals of becoming a better clarinetist, teacher, and
musician.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. All applied music students are expected to attend lessons regularly
and
to progress as a performing musician.
2. Music Majors enrolled in applied lessons will perform on at least
one
student recital (exemptions by instructor) and final
juries.
3. Non-Music Majors may perform on the student recital at the discretion
of the instructor.
4. JURIES---All applied students will perform at the final
juries before a
panel of instructors:

You are
allowed one unexcused absence. Additional unexcused absences will
lower your grade one letter grade. You will be signing in at the end

the
general development of skills. See detailed account of grading
procedure below.
LISTENING ASSIGNMENT
Listening to quality performances of the instruments musicians play
is a vital component
to one's development. In an effort to encourage more listening of excellent
role models, I am
requiring students to listen to 2 (TWO) recordings of anything associated
with their instrument
(i.e. concertos, sonatas, etc.). Students will turn in two forms (see attached)
at their jury. Sorry no Jazz
only classical type repertoire. Some listening examples are available
on my web page. Student will turn
in a brief listening report get form from me or it will be posted on my web
page.
Clarinet Book of Articles
All students are expected to have a 3 ring binder to accumulate articles
dealing with the clarinet.
Each semester I ask that you do a small amount of research on the clarinet something
that you are
interested in. At the jury, turn in to me the articles that you are putting
in your book. You need to
find a minimum of two.
ATTENDANCE:
Because applied music lessons are by nature an ongoing experience that
will yield results over a period of time, you are expected to attend
your
lessons regularly. Your attendance at lessons will be recorded. If
your
instructor misses your lesson, the lesson will be re-scheduled. If
you
miss a lesson for an unexcused absence, the lesson will not be re-scheduled.
If you expect to miss a lesson, arrange for your absence in
advance with the instructor. The decision of an absence being excused
or
unexcused lies solely with the instructor.

APPLIED LESSONS

*******************************************************
PROFICIENCIES IN CLARINET
Listed below are the requirements for each level in clarinet study. Initially, an incoming freshman student must audition to determine the level of competency. Students who are not up to standard college level playing may be place in a rudimentary level--064. In order for a student to pass on to the next level of study, the student must be able to satisfactorily demonstrate the competency of the respective level. The levels are sequential. A student is not allowed to skip levels.
The material listed for each level is intended to act as a guideline. For the
jury, the student will be asked to play an etude, a solo, and scales as outlined
