COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Overall the
objectives are to prepare you for all phases of secondary music ( A mighty
Tall order!!)
1. Here are some of the "nuts & bolts" areas to be
covered:

why teach music?
-
selling your program - Arts advocacy
-
Fundraising or...other ways to support your program without
selling fruitcake!

Class management & organization. Planning--keys
to success!

Preparing for festivals, etc.
-
Repertoire for Large ensembles ---resources (if needed)

Teaching General Music classes
-
Developing a well rounded program
2. Look at dealing with the teenager today - class management, class
discipline and other issues.
3. Develop strong rehearsal techniques--a
key element for success

review conducting
- video and discuss rehearsals

techniques to "teach" in the rehearsal

techniques to make your rehearsal "sizzle" - who wants to
be boring?
4. Music Education as a profession
5. Getting the Job - resume, interviewing, cover letters,
etc.....and a little about keeping the job.

as a teacher the less problems will confront you!!

read assignments
take part in class discussions
study for and take a mid-term exam and final written exam
go to 2 secondary school observations ( see below)
prepare for Music Ed seminar and class video taped rehearsal
practices
prepare for mock interview. Your portfolio must be
read for the interview.
You will do
a short reaction paper after the interview.
TEACHER EXPECTATIONS
prepare for class
lead stimulating class discussions
be available for additional assistance
assist with setting up your class observations
provide immediate feedback to exams and video sessions
GRADING RATIONALE -

SCHOOL OBSERVATIONS
you will go to 2 different secondary schools
and observe (i.e. band, general music, choir, orchestra)
you will call the directos ahead of time to ask permission
to visit their class.
after each observation, you will turn in a written
(typed) report of your visit.
the first report is due during the midterm---the second
report is due at the final exam.
POLICY ON LATE ASSIGNMENTS & EXAMS:
All due dates are firm. Absolutely, no extensions.
The only excuses accepted for missing an exam or assignment deadline are:
death in family with note from the Dean, severe illness with a note from
a physician or health service, or any type of hospitalization. If
you need any help with the material or clarification on assignments, please
see me during my office hour or contact me for an appointment.
