- This Sand
Prairie and Black Oak Barrens is located 18 miles from Winona State and
is very easy to find.
- After
crossing the Interstate Bridge, accessing from Hwy 43 t turn
right on Hwy 54
- Proceed
past Centerville continuing straight through that four way stop to
Hwy K.
- At Hwy
K, turn right (South), watching for Gilbo Lane which is 1/2
mile from the K and Hwy 54 Intersection.
- Turn
left onto Giilbo Lane and proceed past two ranch style homes to the
third place.
- There is a
tall grass prairie to the right as you enter, home to Golden Alexander,
Midland Shooting Star, Blue gentian, Meadow Rue, Culvers Root, Tall St.
John's Wort and to the left is an original prairie remnant that bordered a
railroad that went between Trempealeau and Galesville, WI.
- The 26
acres has three main levels, one creekbed that flows to Beaver Creek and
the Black River and the Mississippi, one the sand prairie and oak barrens
and one the tall grass, woodland and building area.
- There
are wood sedges, 3 acres of lupines, goats rue, poppy mallow and many
other dry species.
- The prairie
was planted in 1996 but the hillside and the abandoned railroad right of
way have original habitat.
- The
plantings were done predominately with seeds collected in sand areas
within fifty miles of the site
