Winona State University's Leadership Institute and the College of Business Present:

Dr. Barry Asmus

Barry Asmus

Dr. Asmus' key note speech is entitled, "Why should we be hopeful?   America's Economic Future: The Six Unstoppable Trends.  Strategies for how to deal with current economic changes."

It seems absurd to be hopeful about the economy when states across the nation, including Minnesota, are forecasting significant shortfalls, inflation is rising and foreclosures continue to increase.  Yet that is the message that noted economist Dr. Barry Asmus will present at this year's Economic Summit.

Asmus is a Senior Economist with the National Center for Policy Analysis, one of the most influential think tanks in America today.  In his opinion, the current economic situation should be viewed from a long term perspective and the "Six Unstoppable Trends" that are impacting America's business and its economy are still very relevant.  Some results of these powerful long-term trends are:
♦ a strong stock market;
♦ low unemployment;
♦ low inflation;
♦ high labor productivity;
♦ record economic growth; and
♦ consumer net worth at all-time highs.

Currently, 75 million Baby Boomers are in the high spending category and most productive stages of their lives.  Asmus will present strategies on how companies and communities of the 21st century must be positioned to capitalize on these trends.  He will also identify the benefits and drawbacks of globalization and discuss how we should respond.

Many cities across the nation have navigated economic shifts by reinventing themselves.  Drawing from these examples and his research on Minnesota entrepreneurs, he will provide thoughts on how our region might prepare for a different age.
