What is Model Legislature?
Model Legislature is a two day legislative program modeled after the Minnesota State Legislature.  It is held for students in grades 6-12 on the first Thursday and Friday in December at Winona State University.  Students select real bills to present during the two days.  Students are members of the Senate, House of Representatives and can even be elected into the Governor's office. The WSU Teaching Social Studies in the Secondary students serve as committee administrators and advisors to the Senate, House of Representatives and Governor's office.

What is the history of Model Legislature?
Model Legislature has been in existence for at least 50 years. For the last 30 years WSU has hosted the activity and Winona Senior High School has produced the bill book.

 

Who facilitates Model Legislature?

Gene Pelowski serves as Model Legislature’s Advisor.  Representative Pelowski serves in the Minnesota State Legislature and teaches social studies at Winona Senior High School.  Winona State University’s Outreach and Continuing Education and Technology Departments assist with the coordination of the program.  

 

How will your school benefit? 

Financial incentive: each participating school will receive an annual $1,000 stipend to be used for the purchase of technology, a stipend for the coordinating teacher, and student transportation to Winona.
