PER 417 - Advanced Camp Cooking(1 credit, non-credit or CEU)

Description:   Camp cooking will involve techniques and equipment necessary for successful outdoor gourmet meals. Students will acquire skills in shopping, packing meal planning, and preparing food prior to trip departure. Students will also be able to demonstrate knowledge in regard to cooking equipment, and actual on trail meal preparation. Additional fee: $10.
ENG 210-02 - Advanced Expository Writing (3 credits)

Description: An advanced course in writing expository essays for academic audiences, this class emphasizes the development of a mature prose style and a sophisticated approach to textual interpretation. Students refine their rhetorical and grammatical/mechanical competence, and they strengthen their skills in academic research, source integration, critical analysis, and evaluative judgment. Prerequisite: ENG 111.
HUM 140-01 - Approaches to Film(3 credits)

Description: A general introduction to the art of the film, the course addresses elements of narrative, composition, design, cinematography, acting, directing, editing, and sound, as well as theory and criticism.

Description: This course gives students a solid and complete foundation in flat water skills and an introduction to applying them on moving water. In this class students will be exposed to the following skills: moving water techniques, stroke refinement, safety skills, reading water, hazard identification and how to paddle on the Mississippi river safely. Students will also learn basic packing techniques and camping skills. Will include an overnight. Additional fee $30.

Description: This course aims to strengthen students' reading and writing abilities in preparation for college-level writing. Description: A hands-on fundamental overview acquainting students with craft projects of particular value to Recreation or Activity Programmers. Class content will include additional exploration into the changing role of crafts from "Folk Art" to crafts which accommodate the needs of special populations in hospital, geriatric and rehabilitation settings. A variety of craft projects will be taught and constructed by class participants. Additional fee: $30.

Description: The development of basic fundamental skills, knowledge, and strategies involved in beginning disc golf in order to be able to enjoy disc golf as a lifetime activity.

ECON 315 - 01 Environmental and Natural Resource Economics(3 credits)

Description: An introduction to the economics of natural resource management and environmental quality. Theory and policy in the use of non-renewable and renewable resources, and in the control of pollution. Current issues in those areas are featured. Prerequisite: ECON 201 or instructor's permission.

PER 144 - Fundamentals of Kayaking(1 credit, non-credit or CEU)

Description: An introduction to whitewater kayaking techniques. The course will cover all the basic paddling strokes, reading rivers, understanding the dynamics of moving water, swiftwater rescue techniques and the Eskimo roll. The one week course will conclude with a trip down the Root River. Additional cost: $30.

PER 144 - Fundamentals of Rowing(1 credit, non-credit or CEU)

Description: This course serves as an introduction to the concept of "crew." As this is a team event, we will be concentrating on the essentials of crewing an 8 man shell. Basic rowing techniques, synchronizing skills, personal fitness and developing teamwork are the essential elements involved. A regatta style event will conclude this one week class. Additional fee $30.

CMST 289 - Gender and Communication (3 credits)

Description: A cultural approach to the study of males' and females' communication styles including language choice, creation of meaning, interpretation of reality, interaction patterns, nonverbal messages and metaphors. Explores the similarities and differences between the male and the female communication culture in a variety of interpersonal and situational contexts including families, organizations, peer groups, friendships and romantic relationships. Offered yearly.

PER 417 - GPS & Geocaching(1 credit, non-credit or CEU)

Description:   Students will learn the basics of map and compass & quickly move on to electronic mapping with a GPS. Geocaching, a high-tech game of hide and seek, will be introduced and practiced throughout the course. Addition fee: $15.

Description: Proper equipment, safety & trail etiquette will be a focus. Students will gain knowledge of hiking areas within a 15 miles radius of Winona. Additional fee: $10.

PER 144 - Introduction to Kite Boarding

Description Students will be introduced to equipment design, safety concepts, kite launching, how to fly precision patterns, de-powering the kite for landing and harness use. Students will be able to use the kite to pull themselves on short controlled reaches. Additional fee $10.

ACCT 380 - 01 Lean Accounting(3 credits)

Description Description: An analysis of current topics, trends, issues and software relevant to the milieu of accounting. The subject matter can vary by semester and is typically announced in advance by the instructor. This course may be repeated as topics change. Prerequisite: Instructor's permission. Not offered every year.

PER 417 - Leave No Trace(1 credit, non-credit or CEU)

Description:   Students will be educated on the "Leave No Trace" philosophy by a certified instructor. The group will spend time on the trail and in the classroom exploring the importance of "Leave No Trace." Certification is gained by the student upon successful completion of the course.

Description:  The course follows the American Red Cross guidelines and successful completion of the course will certify you in CPR/First Aid/AED & Lifeguarding.  Prerequisites:  You should be a strong swimmer in the following: freestyle, breaststroke, treading water, submerging to water of 10 – 15 feet, and a strong kicker (breaststroke kick, scissors kick, etc.).

PER 417 - Literature and the Outdoors

Description: Students will explore the intimate connection between nature and some of the world's greatest authors. Time will be spent specifically on Tolkien and "The Hobbit," assessing the philosophical relationship we all have with adventure. Additional fee: $10.

Description: Pilates Training is a specifically designed series of mind-body movements, exercises and stretches to develop strong, flexible muscles without adding bulk.  An emphasis on breathing and torso strength ensures improved posture and reduced stress and risk of injury.  All exercises are to help strengthen, stretch, streamline and stabilize the body for better balance, coordination and body awareness.

Description: This course provides an overview of tobacco addiction, current treatment approaches and relapse prevention. This course is appropriate for students of counseling and the helping professions and for those interested in exploring their own tobacco cessation. Description:   Wilderness first aid will offer an overview of safety and emergency care on the trail. Topics will include basic first aid, procedure, and evacuation techniques. This is not a certification. It will help students decide if a full Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder is the right choice.

POLS 199 - Women and Politics (3 credits)

Description: An open discussion of some political topics of current interest. Discussion centers around causes and possible remedies of some of the maladies of modern society. The different alternatives are discussed with an eye toward acquiring a better understanding of the problems. May be taken for up to 3 semester hours.
