Winona State University Academic Probation/Suspension Policy
Students must be in good academic standing at the end of the academic year to remain enrolled in the University. At Winona State University, minimum standards for good academic standing are defined as follows:
Student has achieved a cumulative grade point average of 1.75 or higher for the first 15 credits attempted at WSU,
or
Student has achieved a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or higher once 16 or more degree credits have been attempted at WSU,
In addition, Student has maintained a cumulative satisfactory course completion rate of at least 67% of all credits attempted at WSU. Academic Probation
At the end of each fall semester, students who do not meet the minimum standards for good academic standing as outlined above will be placed on academic probation. Students on academic probation will be sent a notice informing them of their status and requesting that they make an appointment to meet with a member of the academic appeal committee. Students who meet with a member of the appeal committee or with their assigned academic advisor, and provide documentation of that meeting to the Advising Services office, will be allowed to register for fall semester of the next academic year.
Academic Suspension
At the end of each spring semester, students who do not meet the minimum standards for good academic standing as outlined above will be placed on academic suspension. Students on academic suspension will be sent a notice informing them of their status and inviting them to submit a written appeal for readmission.
Administrative Reinstatement
The following students may be granted administrative reinstatement if they submit a written appeal:
1. Students suspended for the first time who have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher are eligible for administrative reinstatement if a written appeal is submitted.
2. Students suspended for the first time who have a term grade point average of 2.00 or higher (counting only spring semester classes) and a term completion rate of 67% or higher (counting only spring semester classes) are eligible for administrative reinstatement if a written appeal is submitted.
Written and Oral Appeals
All other students on academic suspension may submit a written appeal which will be reviewed by the academic appeal committee. If the written appeal is denied, the student may appeal in person to the committee. If the written or in-person appeal is granted, the student will be readmitted for the following term. If the written or in-person appeal is denied, any classes that the student is registered for will be dropped, and the student must remain out of the university according to the following schedule:
1. Students who have received a first notice of suspension are suspended for one academic term (the following fall term)
2. Students who have received a second notice of suspension are suspended for a full academic year (the following fall and spring terms)
3. Students who have received three or more notices of suspension are suspended for two full academic years (the following two fall and spring terms)
Students on suspension may attend summer school classes. If the student is able to achieve minimum standards for good academic standing by attending summer school classes, the student will be readmitted for the following fall term.
