The Plan for WSU and the Surrounding Communities
WSU must be fully engaged and integrated into Winona and the surrounding communities.
The Plan for WSU and the Surrounding Communities
Goal 1: To enhance the image and reputation of WSU in the community.
WSU needs to focus the public's attention on the positive contributions of the university and take whatever steps necessary to build more of a sense of true community between WSU and the City of Winona. Faculty, staff and student accomplishments need to be emphasized in the media.
Goal 2: To emphasize WSU as a cultural and intellectual resource for the region.
WSU should emphasize its importance as a cultural and intellectual center for the surrounding communities. Theatre, music, and dance performances are the types of activities that draw members of the surrounding communities to Winona State. The Lyceum Series is another excellent example of what can be done.
Goal 3: To integrate culturally diverse individuals into the community.
Recruiting faculty, staff, or students of diverse cultural backgrounds into a homogeneous community is difficult. Faculty, staff, and students should all work toward the common goal of creating a community tolerant of individual differences.
Goal 4: To emphasize Winona State is an important resource to the various communities it serves (economic, health care, educational, social service, etc.) and that the University will remain responsive to the needs of these various communities.
Though studies have demonstrated the economic impact of Winona State on the region, much remains to be done to illustrate to the community of southeastern Minnesota that WSU is an important educational, social, cultural, and economic asset . Further, WSU should continue to emphasize the important service it provides in educating a significant number of the area's citizens.
