The Plan For Student Development
Winona State should be an active living and learning community which fosters student growth and development intellectually, psychologically, physically, socially, and professionally.
Goal 1: To deliver a strong, on-going program of student development for all students which complements the academic orientation of the university.
Student development needs to be carried beyond the first few days of a student's freshman year and should be interwoven throughout each student's university experience, regardless of when they enroll during the year, their age at enrollment or their full-time/part time status.
WSU should develop and maintain a strong pre-first quarter orientation program which begins to integrate new students into the university culture. By learning the culture early in their college careers, students will be better prepared for the rigors of university life.
As a fully integrated program, student development should be tied to the university's academic culture and not be left the sole responsibility of the residence hall directors and resident assistants.
Goal 2: To encourage active and responsible citizenship and civility on and off campus and provide a cultural setting in which people of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds feel welcome.
We need to help our students understand individual differences, develop a respect for opinions different than their own, and balance this respect within the boundaries of the first amendment.
WSU students should be aware of and sensitive to the environmental, educational, political, and social conditions where they live.
