Long Range Plan

 

Winona State will become a high quality, inclusive learning community.

A university is more than a collection of faculty, staff, students, and facilities. It is a community of learners engaged in the processes of teaching, thinking, knowing, interacting, and participating. It is a community that draws in people of all ages, backgrounds, interests and goals; it encourages diversity while promoting sensitivity and civility. A learning community is one of exploration, encouragement, and opportunity.

Our vision of the future of Winona State presents a significant challenge to administrators, faculty, students, legislators, and the people of southeastern Minnesota who will have to work together to make this vision a reality.

Achieving this vision will require a change in the culture of Winona State University. A change that will emphasize both quality, community and inclusiveness.

Specifically, our vision for the future requires that WSU recruit and enroll well-prepared incoming students from culturally diverse backgrounds, representing traditional and non-traditional age groups, having a wide variety of interests, talents, and life experiences.

Students graduating from Winona State should possess all the characteristics of a liberally educated person, and the curriculum content should be structured to fulfill the needs of such a person. The curriculum should be coherent internally with respect to courses and externally with respect to other departments.

In order to achieve our vision, WSU faculty, administrators, and staff must be a culturally diverse complement of outstanding teachers, competent scholars, and effective and efficient administrators. We must develop and emphasize high quality graduate education focusing on the unique needs of and opportunities within the WSU service area.

WSU must continue to provide a comprehensive complement of programs in Rochester consistent with the WSU vision of quality education.

Winona State should be an active living and learning community which fosters student growth and development intellectually, psychologically, physically, socially, and professionally. Space and facilities should be developed such that they instill a sense of pride among faculty, staff and students. Facilities should be aesthetically pleasing, efficient, and comfortable living, learning, and working environment which enhances learning community interactions.

Additionally, WSU must be fully engaged and integrated into Winona, Rochester, and other surrounding communities.

Finally, through the achievement of the goals outlined, Winona State University expects to develop a national reputation for quality.
