Nominate Distinguished Alumni & Friends of WSU

Each year Winona State University and the Alumni Society recognize individuals for their outstanding commitment to Winona State University community of learners. Distinguished Alumni Award recipients are graduates who have gone on to achieve prominence in their chosen profession. The Distinguished Young Alumni Award recognizes graduates thirty-five years of age or younger, who have distinguished themselves through their community involvement. The altruistic efforts of individuals who have significantly enhanced the university’s mission and excellence are recognized with the Distinguished Service Award.

Distinguished Awardees

Purpose:
These awards will recognize Winona State University alumni and friends who have achieved prominence in their chosen field of endeavor and/or who have made significant contributions to Winona State in the form of financial support, service, etc.

Selection:
Initial selection will be made by a committee appointed by the Alumni Society President. Final selection will be made by a majority vote of a quorum present at an officially convened WSU Alumni Society Board meeting.

Committee:
The Committee shall consist of the Alumni Society President or appointed representative and four appointed alumni (a minimum of two who are not Board members.) Each committee member shall serve a two-year term with two new members appointed in the fall. The Alumni Director will serve as ex-officio member. The committee shall be responsible for securing nominations for consideration and for making final recommendations to the Board. The committee shall also make recommendations to the Board on the continuation and improvement of the Award Program.

Nomination:
Nominations may be made by anyone wishing to do so. A nomination form must be submitted to the WSU Alumni Society by the nominator. Biographical information will be held by the Alumni Society for a period of three years and then transferred to an inactive file. The awards may be awarded annually in each category. The nomination may be resubmitted at any time.

Presentations:
The Awards will be presented at the WSU Annual Spring Reunion Awards Banquet. Each recipient and a guest will be invited as guests of the Alumni Society for the morning buffet and evening dinner.

Selection Criteria For Distinguished Alumni Award

Basic Requirements:

1. Must be a graduate of Winona State University.
2. Should be encouraged to accept the award in person.
3. There is no age restriction.
4. Other considerations:
   • Excellence in chosen profession
   • Research/publications/continued advancement in his/her field
   • Awards/honors
   • Leadership: Both professional and community
   • Loyalty to Winona State University
   • WSU Faculty/Staff qualify for consideration following three years of employment

Selection criteria for Distinguished Young Alumni Award

Basic Requirements:

1. Must be a graduate of Winona State University.
2. Should be encouraged to accept the award in person.
3. Candidates must be under 45 years of age at the time of selection.
4. Recognize accomplishments of past 20 years.
5. Other considerations:
   • Excellence in chosen profession
   • Research/publications/continued advancement in her/her field
   • Awards/honors
   • Leadership: Both professional and community
   • Loyalty to Winona State University
   • WSU Faculty/Staff may qualify for consideration following three years of employment.

Selection criteria for Distinguished Service Award

Basic Requirements:

1. Need not be a Winona State University graduate.
2. There is no age restriction.
3. Must have significant contributions to Winona State in the form of financial support, service, or gifts in kind such as art objects, antiques, library collections, etc.
4. Other considerations:
   • WSU Faculty/Staff may qualify for consideration following three years of employment.
