Prospective Student-Athlete

I would like to welcome prospective WSU student-athletes to Winona State University.  The recruiting process is an exciting but stressful time in a student-athlete’s life.  Deciding on what school, what state, how far to move away from home, what major, what division of athletic involvement, debating on which sport to play, or to play sports at all, are all questions that are circulating in a young adults mind during the recruiting process.  I encourage you to actively research your educational decision and start the search early.

The prospective Student-Athlete page is designed to give student-athletes information to assist them in making an informed decision on attending college.  Take time and look through the Student Athlete Services page to see the programs offered to the student-athletes at WSU.

Winona State University is an NCAA Division II Intercollegiate Athletics Program.  WSU is home to 80 academic majors, 10 pre-professional programs, as well as 15 intercollegiate sports programs.  The highlight of the 2005-2006 school year was our Men’s Basketball Team winning the 2006 Division II National Championship and our athletic program winning the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference All-Sports Award.

Here are a few tips from WSU coaches: Contact the coach of the sport you are interested in participating. Complete the athletic questionnaire (if possible send a video), team rosters, resume and copy of unofficial transcripts and SAT or ACT scores. The athletic questionnaire is available in this website under each sport.  Remember that student-athletes need to fill out a questionnaire so coaches can get into contact with the prospective student-athlete.

Prospective student-athletes should apply early (application cost is only $20.00).  Benefits of applying early are being admitted to WSU, placed on the housing list before other students who registered and you can register for classes ahead of students who waited to apply later in the year.  All of these benefits allow for a more flexible schedule that meets the needs of the student-athlete.

I look forward to working with you as the athletic department academic advisor.  Once you have chosen Winona State to further your education and athletic experience, I will help guide you through the process of registration.

Sincerely,

Mike Turgeon
