WSU Begins Season With Victory

Jonte Flowers LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL -- Winona State University built a, 14-point, first-half, lead and went on to hand the University of North Alabama an 88-82 setback in Disney Division II Tip-Off action.

The No. 1-ranked Warriors took a quick 8-3 lead only to see the Lions knot the score at ten-all with 16:11 left in the opening half. From there the Warriors outscored UNA 29-15 for a 39-25 lead with 4:06 left in the half. UNA did manage to counter with a 12-4 run to close out the first period trailing the Warriors 43-37.

In the second half WSU pushed its lead back up to 12 points, 62-50, with 13:02 to play. North Alabama once again rallied to get within four points, 64-60, with 10:17 to play, but the Warriors pretty much put the game under control by building its lead back up to 76-66 with 6:12 left on the game clock.

The Warriors had five players finish in double figures, as Jonte Flowers led the charge with 21 points. Quincy Henderson followed with 16 points, John Smith tallied 13, Ben Fischer came off the bench to score 12 and David Johnson was the fourth starter in double figures with 10 points.

Smith did finish the game with a double-double by coming up 14 rebounds. Smith overall performance was enhanced with five assists, five blocked shots and two steals.

UNA hold the edge in rebounding 43-39, but WSU forced the Lions it 18 turnovers, while the Warriors had 14.
