Story by: Winona State Sports Information Office
MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- Winona State University opened play in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with a 5-1 win and 6-3 loss to Southwest Minnesota State University at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
In Game One Winona State senior, pitcher, Bryan Ruff gave up a leadoff single to the Mustangs in the first inning for the only hit he allowed in the complete-game effort. SMSU did come up with its lone run in the top of the fourth. It was of the unearned variety and came without the benefit of a hit. Ruff ended the game with seven strikeouts and one walk.
The Warriors overcame a 1-0 deficit in the twinbill opener with three runs in the last of the fourth and two insurance in the bottom of the sixth.
WSU came up with only five hits, but a two-run triple by Sam Henriksen gave the Warriors their insurances run in the sixth. In the fourth Mike Wendland and John Magee each drove in runs with base hits, while the Wendland scored on a wild pitch.
In Game Two, SMSU did the opposite and came back from a 2-0 deficit with four runs in the fourth. The Mustangs added two more runs in the sixth before WSU wrapped up the scoring with a run in its share of the sixth.
Joe Kley had a pinch-hit triple to drive in WSU's run in the sixth, while a throwing error and Dru Mickelson's base hit plated the Warrior runs in the second.
Ross Hellenbrand pitched the first five innings and suffered the loss, despite striking out seven.
