Warriors and Mustangs Split Again

Story by: Winona State Sports Information

Ronnie Olson MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- For the second day in a row Winona State University and Southwest Minnesota State University split a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Much in the same fashion the previous day, WSU won the opener, this time by a 9-8 score, and dropped the nightcap by a 7-4 count.

In the opener Winona State came back from six runs down when SMSU opened the game with six runs in the top of the first. The Warriors' winning run eventuall scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning, where Winona State scored three runs after trailing 8-6.

The Warriors countered in their half of the first with three runs and then tied the game with three more runs in the second before the Mustangs took their 8-6 lead with two runs in the fifth.

WSU second baseman Ronnie Olson had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Ross Hellenbrand added a couple of hits and drove in two runs.

Evan Buhr pitched the fourth through sixth innings for the Warriors and recorded the win, while Don Erdall tossed the seventh, gave up a walk, but captured the save.

In the second game SMSU jumped out quick again, but this time the Warriors could not make the full comeback. The Mustangs scored three times in the first and followed up with two runs in the second and single runs in the fourth and fifth for a 7-2 lead after it was all said and done.

Olson again came up with three hits and drove in two runs. Joe Kley contributed two hits and two RBI in the losing effort.
