Basketball Times Names Smith Player of The Year

Smith vs Mary PINEHURST, NC -- Winona State University's John Smith has been named 2008 Basketball Times NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Player of the Year.

It is the second straight year Smith has been honored with the Division II top player of the year award by the publication.

Smith has been a force inside for the Warriors. The, 6-8, senior is averaging 17.7 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game to go along with a 52.0 percent shooting average, 73.0 percent average from the free throw line and 103 blocked shots.

Joining Smith on the All-America First Team was teammate Jonte Flowers. The duo has helped lead WSU to a 35-1 record, a 29-game winning streak and a third straight entrance to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight Tournament.

Flowers has averaged 17.2 ppg and 5.4 rpg to go along with 105 assists and 110 steals.
