Barrone Named National Player Of The Year

MONTGOMERY, AL -- Winona State University, senior, catcher, Ben Barrone has been named the Rawlings/ABCA NCAA Division II National Player of the Year during an announcement made as part of the NCAA Division II World Series held at Riverwalk Stadium.
Barrone was named to the Rawlings/ABCA All-American Team and receive a second First Team All-American award when the inaugural Daktronics Inc., 2007 All-American First Team was announced.
Barrone became the second WSU athlete to be named National Player of the Year for the 2006-2007 season. WSU, junior, center, John Smith was named NCAA Division II basketball national player of the year by three organizations.
On the season Barrone led Division II with a single-season WSU record 27 home runs and posted a national-leading 1.089 slugging percentage. On the season Barrone finished with an impressive .449 batting average. He collected 64 runs batted in, 50 runs scored and 16 doubles.
Barrone also was very effective on the mound. He appeared in 14 games was credited with four saves and had 23 strikeouts in 16 and a third innings.
Barrone accomplised all those numbers despite WSU (29-15) losing 16 games to weather this spring.
Barrone had a two-year stint at Winona State and hit a school-record 43 home runs.
