Warriors Split With Fighting Sioux

Mike Wendland FT. MYERS, FL -- Winona State University continued its southern swing by splitting a doubleheader with the University of North Dakota, winning the first 8-3 in eight innings and losing the second 5-1.

The Warriors broke open the opener by coming up with five runs in the top of the eighth inning. Mike Brabender drove in two runs with a double and Kyle Collins followed with a two-run home run, his first collegiate round tripper.

North Dakota took the early lead with three runs in the last of the fourth, but WSU came back to tie the game with three runs in the top half of the sixth. Joe Kley, Ronnie Olson, Mike Wendland and Andrew Kes all singled consecutively with Kley, Olson and Kes driving in the runs.

Jim Kovacs pitched the last three innings for the Warriors and gave up one hit, one walk and struck out two to earn the win.

In the second game North Dakota scored in three straight innings to built the winning 5-1 lead.

Wendland led the Warriors by coming up with three of the team's eight hits.

Matt Ruben started and pitched five innings in taking the loss.
