WSU Splits With Bemidji State

Story by: Winona State Sports Information Office

Andrew Kes BEMIDJI, MN -- Winona State University had to settle for a split against Bemidji State University in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.

The Warriors opened with a 9-2 win as Andrew Kes drove in five runs, but in the second game a four-run fourth inning was the difference in BSU's 5-3.

In that first game Kes' five RBI supported the six-inning, three-hit pitching effort by Ross Hellenbrand. Hellenbrand did walk three and struck out five, while Kes gave the Warriors all the runs the eventually would need with a three-run home run in the third inning. Kes then followed up in the fourth inning with a two-run double and Ronnie Olson added to the innings' effort with a RBI-single.

Kes was three-for-five on the day with a run scored, while Olson had two hits, two runs scored to go along with his RBI. Dru Michelson added a 2-for-3 day at the plate and scored twice with two runs batted in. John Magee added another two hits for the Warriors who had 13 in the game.

In Game Two, BSU got to Justin Kunferman in the fourth. Kunferman gave up the four runs on sixth hits and a walk and finished with five strikeouts.

WSU led 2-0 before the last of the fourth and cut its deficit with a run in the fifth. But, Bemidji State added an insurance run in the sixth.

Magee and Jared Anderson led the WSU offense with two hits each.
