One-Hitter Leads To Split
Story by: Winona State Sports Information Office
BISMARCK, ND -- Ross Hellenbrand tossed a one-hitter to lead Winona State University to a 5-0 win over the University of Mary and a split of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader.
Hellenbrand's masterpiece came in Game Two of the twinbill and after the Marauders posted a 1-3 victory in the opener.
Hellenbrand gave up UM's lone hit in the sixth inning after he had retired nine consecutive batters. A WSU error in the second inning and a lead off walk in the third were the only other UM runners to reach base before the hit.
A four-run fourth inning gave Hellenbrand all the support he needed. A two-run single by Sam Henriksen and run-scoring singles by Joe Kley and Mike Wendland produced the runs in the fourth. The other WSU run came in the sixth inning when Kyle Collins drove in John Magee.
Hellenbrand finished the game with three walks and 14 strikeouts.
In Game One, the Warriors scored an unearned run in the fifth inning, after the Marauders had built a 2-0 lead. Ronnie Olson scored for the Warriors on a base hit by Magee.
Don Erdall suffered the tough-luck loss, pitching a complete game and giving up three runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out six.
