Ninth Inning Costs Warriors

Story by: Winona State Sports Information Office

NSIC Logo WAYNE, NE -- Winona State University saw its comeback effort fall short when Upper Iowa University came up with three runs in the top of the ninth inning to hand the Warriors a 9-6 setback in the double-elimination Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament.

The loss eliminated the Warriors, who closed out their season with a 21-21 record.

The Warriors had come back from a 6-4 deficit to tie the game at six with two runs in the last of the eight. But UIU countered in the top of the ninth for three runs and the Warriors had little left to rally once again.

Mike Wendland keyed the Warriors in some early scoring. In the first Wendland led off with a walk and eventually scored on a single by Ronnie Olson. Then  in the third Wendland led off the frame with a home run.

In the second inning, Ross Hellenbrand led off with a double and went on to score on a single by Mike Brabender, who would later scored on a single by Sam Henrikson.

The final WSU runs came in the eighth to tie the game. With two-outs Andrew Kes and Hellenbrand hit back-to-back singles and came around to score off Brabender's double.
