Warriors Fall to USD Coyotes

Story by: Winona State Sports Information Office

VERMILLION, SD -- The University of South Dakota (2-0) took a 14-0 lead and then answered each of Winona State University's (1-1) come back touchdowns and went on to record a 49-28 nonconference win in the DakotaDome.

Drew Aber threw for 300 yards and four touchdowns and Scott Peters caught seven passes for 110 yards and one touchdown for WSU.

WSU came up with a 41-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter on a pass from Aber to Peters and Ryan Abbott booted the extra point to bring the Warriors within 42-28 with 6:11 to play. But the Coyotes came right back on the ensuing series and scored on a 67-yard catch and run with 4:24 left on the clock.

That Warrior score came after USD scored on a 16-yard quarterback run at 7:55.

In the fourth quarter WSU got back into the game down 35-21, when Aber and Tyree Burks combined for a 35-yard scoring strike with  Abbott converting the extra point and 12:24 left in the game.

A 33-yard rushing burst gave USD a 35-14 lead late in the third period.

The Warriors cut into the Coyotes' 28-7 lead with 4:58 left in the third quarter when Aber threw a 13-yard TD pass to  Abbott. Abbott then kicked the point after.

The second half started with USD recovering a WSU fumble and returning it 21 yards for a score just one minute and 20 seconds into the third period.

The Warriors got on the board in the first half when Aber hooked up with Ellis Minor on a 12-yard score. Abbott kicked the extra point and WSU trailed 14-7 with 1:11 to play in the opening half.

The Coyotes' first score came with 10:35 left in the first half on a scamper up the middle from 13 yards outs. The drive covered 92 yards in 12 plays and 12 minutes and 22 seconds.

On the ensuing series WSU was intercepted and USD converted a 57-yard scoring pass on its first play of the series for a 14-0 lead with 6:51 remaining in the first half.

A 65-yard draw play by the Coyotes boosted their halftime lead to 21-7.

The first quarter ended in a 0-0 tie.
