Seven Interceptions Lead To 28-7 WSU Win
Story by: Winona State Sports Information Office
WINONA, MN -- Winona State University came up with seven interceptions and went on to hand Concordia University St. Paul a 28-7 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference setback on Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium.
The seven interceptions by the Warriors equaled a 58-year-old record that was set in 1949 in a game against Mankato State College. Kenzie Yewman and Craig Martindale each had two interceptions, while Brent Yule, Tony Hill and Zach Voigt each came up with pickoffs.
The Warriors defense did give up 234 yards passing and one passing score, but held the Golden Bears to just 27 yards rushing. Yule led the charge with 10 total tackles, while Ryan Rothwell had two and a half sacks and tree tackles for loss.
WSU also took advantage of a couple of CSP Special Teams errors, as two snaps from center on punting situations ended up in the endzone and safeties for the Warriors.
Offensively, Alex Wiese came up with 124 yards rushing on 24 carries and ran in scores from nine yards out in the second quarter and from three yards in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
Scott Peters had only three catches, but set the Homecoming crowd on fire on the second offensive play of the game when he hauled in a Drew Aber pass and streaked down the sideline for a 73-yard touchdown.
The other score for WSU came on 23-yard field goal by Ryan Abbott in the second period.
