Wiese Runs WSU To Outright Title

Story by: Winona State Sports Informatin Office

MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- Winona State University, senior, running back, Alex Wiese rushed for a Warrior single-game record in leading WSU to a 59-34 win over Wayne State College, NE in the Merchants Bank/Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Metrodome Classic.

Wiese carried the ball 30 times for a record 313 yards (the first WSU running back to rush for 300 yards in a game) and two touchdowns. That effort extended the No. 23-ranked Warriors' winning streak to nine games and gave them their tenth win against one loss. The ten wins equals the second best number of wins in a WSU single season. One play that added greatly to Wiese's rushing totals was an 82-yard dash to paydirt.

The victory also gave the Warriors outright possession of the NSIC championship.

The two touchdowns scored by Wiese added 12 points to his career and made him the third all-time leading scorer, while his two touchdowns scored moved him into the No. 2 slot for career TDs by a Warrior.

Senior, quarterback, Drew Aber added to his single-season completion record with 18 completions on 26 attempts, which gives him 200 completions for the season. Aber also passed for 255 yards and five touchdowns. The five touchdown passes equals the second best single-game WSU record and his 274 yards in total offense now ranks him No. 2 in WSU total offense history.

The Warriors', senior, wide receiver Scott Peters was on a number of Aber's completions, hauling seven passes for 134 yards and two scores, including one from 62 yards out.

Place kicker had a solid contest, converting all eight of his extra-point attempts and hit from a career-high 42 yards out for field goal.

The Warriors also set a single-game team record with 652 yards in total offense.

Defensively Brent Yule came up with 11 solo tackles, two tackles for losses of 14 yards, one 13-yard sack and one fumble recovery returned for 41 yards.

The Warriors scored on six of their first seven possession and nine of their first 11 possession. WSU also converted three turnovers into a pair of touchdowns and a field goal.
