WSU Falters At Southwest Minnesota State

Story by: Winona State Sports Information Office

Tyrre Burks MARSHALL, MN -- Winona State University gave up a touchdown with 3:31 left to play and lost 35-28 to Southwest Minnesota State University in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Mattke Field at the Event Center Stadium.

The last score erased a come-from-behind charge by the Warriors in the fourth quarter and left them with a two-game losing streak.

The Warriors trailed 27-14 with 11:16 left to play but converted an interception to a go ahead lead at 28-27 on Tyrre Burks' second straight touchdown reception. The interception came after Burks had hauled in a 21-yard scoring pass to trim SMSU's lead to 27-21.

After WSU had taken a 28-27 lead with 6:07 left to play, SMSU came back with a six-play, 75-yard drive that was capped on a scoring play off a second-and-20 situation.

Burks finished the game with a career-high three touchdown receptions, as he scored on a 14-yard play for the Warriors' first score and finished off his three-TD game with a six-yard scoring reception.

Andrew Verbancouer continued his scoring exploits with a three-yard romp to put WSU up 14-10 with 3:47 left to play in the first half.

Despite giving up the late score, WSU did come up with three turnovers and converted two into touchdowns. Justin Jensen came up with two of those turnovers, both on interception. The other was a fumble recovery by Matt Kaderly.

Also for the defensive Warriors, Ryan Rothwell had three tackles for loss and forced a fumble, while Brandon White came up with a sack and a forced fumble.
