No. 3 Warriors Best No. 7 Wolves

Ben Fisher WINONA, MN -- No. 3-ranked Winona State University scored the final five points of the game and defeated No. 7 Northern State University 71-66 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play at McCown Gymnasium.

The win extended the Warriors' NSIC winning streak to 40 games and their seasonal win streak to 15, while the loss snapped the 11-game winning streak of the Wolves.

The game was tied at 66-all with 2:21 when the Warriors put the clamps on the Wolves. John Smith gave WSU the lead  for good with a layup at the 0:48 mark. David Johnson then gave WSU a four-point cushion with free throws at :21 and :10 to go before Travis Whipple added the final nail in the coffin for the Wolves with a free throw with only one second left to play.

The game was close throughout with the lead changing seven times and the scored tied twice. WSU did lead 34-33 at haftime and outscored the Wolves 37-33 in the final 20 minutes of play.

Smith came up with a double-double for the Warriors on a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Besides Smith three other of the five starters scored in double figures, with Jonte Flowers coming in with 14 points and Johnson and Whipple netting 13 and 11 respectively.
