Warriors Are NSIC Tournament Champions
Story by: Winona State Sports Information Office
WINONA, MN -- Junior, guard, Travis Whipple lit a fire under No. 3-ranked Winona State University late in the first half and propelled the Warriors to a 73-40 win over Northern State University in the championship game of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament at McCown Gymnasium.
The win was the 26th in a row for the Warriors, who won their third straight NSIC Tournament championship.
The Warriors had been trying to pull away from the Wolves in the final stages of the first half but NSU would not go away. Whipple then stroked the fire by hitting the last three shots of the half (including one at the buzzer to end the half) for the Warriors, all of which were three-point field goals, in the last 1:45 of the period and gave WSU a 35-18 lead at the break.
From there the Warriors, the No. 1-ranked team in the NCAA Division II North Central Region, scored the first five points of the second half for a 22-point, 40-18, lead and were never challenged again.
Whipple finished the game with 11 points, by going 4-for-7 from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range. Whipple also dished out five assists.
John Smith led the Warriors with 19 points and Curtrel Robinson came off the bench to tally 15 points.
Quincy Henderson led the Warriors with 11 rebounds, as WSU outrebounded the Wolves 45-33.
Defensively the Warriors forced the Wolves into 13 turnovers and committed only four of their own.
