Daktronics Names Smith Player Of The Year

Smith vs Stout EDINBORO, PA -- Winona State University's John Smith has been named 2008 Daktronics NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Player of the Year.

Smith has been a force inside for the Warriors. The, 6-8, senior is averaging 17.7 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game to go along with a 52.0 percent shooting average, 73.0 percent average from the free throw line and 103 blocked shots.

Joining Smith on the All-America team was teammate Jonte Flowers. The duo has helped lead WSU to a 35-1 record, a 29-game winning streak and a third straight entrance to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight Tournament.

Flowers has averaged 17.2 ppg and 5.4 rpg to go along with 105 assists and 110 steals.

It is the second straight year each player has reached the All-America level on the Daktronics Team.

Voting was conducted among Divison II sports information directors.
