Winona State University head men's basketball coach Mike Leaf did a
little mining and struck a gold vein in finding two recruits and one
transfer who have signed to play basketball at Winona State for the
2002-2003 season. Leaf announced that area standouts Joe Ingvalson of
Caledonia, MN High School and Zack Malvik of Holmen, WI High School have
signed letters of intent to play for his Warrior squad. Both players
have been selected to their respective state Associated Press All-State
teams and both have concluded outstanding high school prep careers.
The third player is Brian Elwer who comes to WSU from Austin, MN High School
by way of one season at Augustana, SD College. He played one season with
the Auggies before returning home last year and sitting out a season of
play. While at Austin High School Elwer was a two-time All-State
selection. "These young men bring a great deal of skill and enthusiasm
to our program," stated Leaf. "Fundamentally they are incredibly sound.
That is a tribute to their high school coaches. I do look forward to
seeing them in a Warrior uniform."
Malvik comes to the Warriors after averaging 17.9 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists per game in his final
prep season. He rounded out his career at Holmen as the school's
all-time scoring leader with 1,440 points. "Zach has great leadership
skills," Leaf pointed out. "He makes everyone around him better. He has
tremendous vision and will be very dangerous in the open court."
Ingvalson averaged 20.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game and
shot 50 percent from the floor in his last prep season at Caledonia.
"He also is a tremendous athlete," continued Leaf of Ingvalson. "He has
very quick feet and long arms. He can score from anywhere on the court
and he is going to be a great asset to our program."
Leaf feels that Elwer will provide a presence in the inside game for the Warriors, what
with his 6-foot, 8-inch and 260-pound size. "He is very mobile and can
do a lot of things for his size." "He has a great passion for the
game," added Leaf of Elwer. "He will definitely strengthen our inside
play."
Leaf began his recruiting season with the signing of
Lewiston-Altura's standout David Zellman in the early signing period.
