Warriors Knock Off No. 1 Metro State
Story by: Winona State Sports Information Office
DENVER, CO -- Heidi Woerle came up with a successful second-half penalty kick to lift Winona State University to (2-1) a 1-0 win over No. 1-ranked Metropolitan State College of Denver (2-1).
The win by the Warriors marked only the second time since 2002 that the Roadrunners had been beaten at home.
The Roadrunners, defending NCAA Division II national champions, outshot the Warriors 12-5 and had eight cornerkicks to a lone cornerkick for the Warriors.
For Woerle it was her first goal and points of the season for the Warriors.
Warrior goal keeper Amanda Diehm worked along with a stellar WSU defense to stop those cornerkick attempts and five shots on goal by MSCD.
“It was a legitimate PK,” said Roadrunner head coach Danny Sanchez. “Rachel (Zollner) guessed the right way but she (Woerle) hit it.
"Winona State deserved this win. They made their chance and the defense didn’t allow us to have good looks at the goal.”
The victory allowed the Warriors to finish with a split in a two-match trip to Colorado.
