Warriors Topple U of Mary

Story by: Winona State Sports Information Office

Holly Sutton WINONA, MN -- Winona State University finally gave up a goal, but the Warriors came out on the long end of a 2-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win over the University of Mary on Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium.

It was the conference opener for each team and served as a little revenge for the Warriors who were beaten by the Marauders in overtime of last year's championship match in the NSIC Tournament. The opponent's goal also snapped a six-match shutout streak by the Warriors.

WSU goalkeeper Amanda Diehm had her streak of not being scored upon at 653 minutes and 54 seconds when Mary struck at 23:03 of the first half. That goal tied the match at one-all, but the Warriors' Gina Florian broke the tie at the 38:59 mark off assists from Rachel Mathews and Cori Beard and it proved to be the game winner.

Diehm came up with six saves, while the Marauders were forced to make six saves off eight shots on goal.

The Warriors struck early when Kayla Walters and Holly Sutton worked a little give-and-go and Walters hit the back of the net.
