The University of Minnesota-Duluth came up with two first-half goals and held on for a
2-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Winona State University October
16 at Maxwell Field.
With the loss the WSU Warriors and the UMD Bulldogs finished tied for first place
honors in the final regular season conference standings with 5-1 records. Overall the
Warriors fall to 10-5 and UMD improves to 8-3.
The Bulldogs got on the board first when Kelly Hritz got a free kick to bounce off the
hands of Warrior goal keeper Crystal Pearson at 28:02 of the half for a goal. Eight
minutes later Jenny Warrick chipped a shot over the head of Pearson into the net for a
2-0 UMD lead. But after that the Bulldogs with finish the game with just nine shots on
goal, four coming in the second half only.
The Warriors finally got back into the game when Erin Morgan knocked in a header off a
corner kick shot from Jessica Brancale. It was Morgan's third goal of the year and
Brancale's third assist of the season.
UMD now holds a 3-1 lead in the season series between the two teams.
