Winona State University scored eight goals in the first half and cruised to an 11-0 win
over Mount Senario College September 9th at Maxwell Field. It was the home opener for the
Warriors, who notched their first win of the season against two losses,while Mount Senario
dropped to 0-4.
The Warriors, a veteran squad, were led by five freshman who combine for nine of the 11
goals WSU scored. Jessica Brancale paced that effort with a hattrick, as she did all of
her scoring in the first half. Jenny Page and Magill each added a pair of goals, while
Danielle Krieg, who started the scoring just five minutes and 23 seconds into the match,
and Alison Fuller each came up with a pair.
The other goals were scored by sophomore Jill Menzies and junior Christine Nettenstrom,
both coming in the final period of play.
The goals were the first of the year for the Warriors, who went scoreless in recent
tournament play, while the Fighting Saints have yet to scored in 360 minutes of play.
The Warriors also had a variety of assists. WSU's all-time leading scorer, junior Besty
Morgan, recorded three assisted, while freshman Emily Kurfist added a pair of assists.
Erin Morgan, Jenny Winders and Kim Huerter rounded out the scoring for the Warriors with
an assist apiece.
Freshman Crystal Pearson was in goal for the Warriors and she had to worry about only two
shots by the Fighting Saints.
WSU, on the other hand, blasted MSC goal keeper Dara Demarest with 45 shots. Demarest came
up with 12 saves.
