Andrea Zilka took a breakaway pass and scored four minutes into the second overtime
period to give Winona State University a 2-1 nonconference soccer victory over Mankato
State University September 16 at Maxwell Field.
The win improved the Warriors' record to 4-2 and extended their winning streak to four
games. The Mavericks, ranked No. 25 in the most recent NSCC/Umbro Division II Top 25 poll,
drops to 5-2 on the season.
Junior Betsy Morgan had given WSU a 1-0 lead nine minutes and five seconds into the
game on an assist from her sister Erin. That lead held up through the remainder of the
opening half and for three-fourths of the second period. But the Mavericks' Amanda Burows
got a kick off in a mad scramble in front of the Warrior net and put the ball past Warrior
freshman goalie Crystal Pearson at the 77:50 mark.
The Warriors did get off a few shots in the wild closing seconds of regulation and then
neither team was able to score in the first 15-mintue overtime period.
The winning play came after time had been stopped when WSU defender Christine
Nettenstrom was injured. But Nettenstrom walked off the field under her own strength and
play was put back into action. Freshman Elisabeth Leibsle put the ball in play from the
top of the goalie's box with a kick down field. Zilka managed to screen a Mankato player
and then outraced the MSU defense to the net for the winning goal.
The goal by Burows stopped the shutout streak of the Warriors to three games and
snapped the streak of not being scored upon at 387 minutes and 20 seconds.
For Zilka, it was her 34th career goal and she upped her career point total to 84.
Betsy Morgan's goal was her 46th career 2-pointer and improves her team career-leading
point total to 118.
It was the fourth meeting between the two squads and WSU now holds a 3-1 record over
the Mavericks.
