DULUTH, MN -- Winona State University scored a pair of goals in the first half and went
on to blank Southwest State University 2-0 in semifinal action of the Northern Sun
Intercollegiate women's soccer championships held October 24 at Greggs Field.
Freshman Sandra Davel scored what was the winning goal, when she took a pass from
junior Betsy Morgan and took a shot on her breakaway that got past the Southwest goal
keeper at the 21:53 mark. It was the fourth goal of the season for Davel and gave her 11
points for the year. Morgan's assist was her sixth of the season and raised her point
total to 23.
Just under seven minutes later the Warriors iced the match, when Andrea Zilka took an
assist from junior defender Jill Miller and scored. It was the team-leading 14th goal of
the season for Zilka and she upped her team-leading point total to 30. The assist by
Miller was her third of the year.
Warrior freshman goal keeper Crystal Pearson had to stop only two shots, as the
Mustangs were able to get off only three shots against the WSU defense.
The shutout was the ninth of the season for the Warriors and for Pearson and added to
the single-season school records for both WSU and Pearson.
The Warriors improved their season record to 11-5 and were to meet the University of
Minnesota-Duluth for the conference title.
