Story by: Winona State Sports Information Office

MARSHALL, MN -- Winona State University worked its way back through the losers' bracket before losing 4-3 to Southwest Minnesota State University in the championship game of the double-elimination Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament.

WSU earned a berth in the title game by winning three games in the loser's bracket and then went on to build a 3-0 lead over SMSU. But the Mustangs, who shared the regular-season NSIC title with the Warriors, came back to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. SMSU then worked a runner into scoring position in the last of the seventh before scoring the winning run with two out.

Terra Halron, Chelsea Rosenow and Karyn Koehnle each drove in a run and Katie Hanson had two hits for the Warriors.

The Warriors began the rain-delayed day by eliminating Upper Iowa University 7-0. WSU then sent Wayne State College, NE home with a 7-1 decision and then reached the championship game of the tournament by clipping Minnesota State University Moorhead 1-0.

Hanson drove in the lone run in the Warriors' win over MSU Moorhead, while Chelsey Ewing earned the pitching win by allowing just five hits and striking out six. Halron led off the bottom of the seventh with a base hit and Hanson followed with the run-scoring double. Halron and Hanson each had two hits in the game.

In WSU's first game of the day, Rosenow got the Warriors going with a three-run home run in the last of the first. Rosenow went on to collect another hit and scored three runs. Laura Wright added two hits to the win and a run batted in. Jenny Stannis scattered five hits, walked one and struck out five to earn the mound win.

Hanson also had a hand in the Warriors' win over WSC by driving in two runs with a double in the second inning and plated another run with a base hit in the fourth. Amanda Wilhelm totaled three hits and three runs, while Kelly Ward and Megan Paulson each had two hits. Kristen Fossell fashioned a complete game by giving up four hits and striking out three.
