Warriors Sweep Minnesota-Duluth

Story by: Winona State Sports Information

Stacey Struzynski WINONA, MN -- Winona State University gave up nine unearned runs but still managed a 10-9 victory and came away with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Minnesota-Duluth on Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium.

That victory came in the second game of the twinball and after the Warriors opened with a 6-2 victory.

The winning run for the Warriors in that second game was also unearned as Amanda Wilhelm led off the sixth with a triple and later scored on a passed ball. That broke a 9-9 tie and the Warriors held the Bulldogs in check for the win.

The longball went a long way towards the WSU win in Game Two. Chelsea Rosenow ripped a two-run home run and several batters later Karyn Koehnle blasted a three-run round tripper for the Warriors. That helped the Warriors tie the game at seven. UMD came back with two runs in the fifth but Mollie Bjelland drove in a run with a double and later scored on an error to tie the game at nine.

WSU's first runs came in the second when Callie Givens plated two runners with a double.

Stacey Stuzynski came on in relief in the first inning and pitched the final six and a third innings for the win. Stuzynski did give up four hits and five walks for three unearned runs, but also struck out 12.

In Game One, Kristen Fossell tossed the complete game. Fossell allowed four hits and a walk and struck out eight.

Bjelland and Koehnle each drove in two runs and one of Terra Halron's two hits was a RBI-double.
