WAYNE, NE -- Winona State University opened it Northern Sun Intercollegaite Conference season with a doubleheader sweep of Wayne State College by scores of 6-4 in ten innings and 5-1.
A bases loaded double by Jenny Wilmes drove in three runs and gave WSU a 6-4 win in ten innings in the opener and then Stacey Struzynski struck out ten and tossed a three-hitter for the second-game win.
The game-winning hit in the opener gave the Warriors a 6-3 lead and then they held on as WSC tried to rally with a run in the last of the tenth.
It was the Warriors who rallied in the top of the seventh for two runs and tied the game at 5-5. Run-scoring base hits by Terra Halron and Amanda Wilhelm knotted up the contest. WSC had scored twice in the last of the first and eventually led 3-1 after four innings.
Wilhelm finished the game with three hits in five trips to the plate, while Kristen Fossell tossed a complete game for the Warriors to earn the mound win. Fossell gave up only five hits and struck out 12.
Annie Stuedemann and Laura Wright each drove in a run in WSU's two-run fourth of the nightcap. Mollie Bjelland's base hit plated two runs and Stuedemann added another RBI-hit in the fifth to wrap up WSU's scoring.
Struzynski went the distance and did not walk a batter.
