WSU Knocks Off No. 5 UN-Omaha

NORTH MANAKTO, MN -- A ground-ball in the top of the 12th inning scored the winning run in Winona State University's 6-5 win over No. 5-ranked University of Nebraska-Omaha before WSU lost 4-3 to Missouri Western State University in the weather-plagued Microtel Inn & Suites Softball Classic.
Mollie Bjelland's ground ball scored Amanda Wilhelm from third with what proved to be the winning run agaisnt UNO.
UNO, ranked No. 1 in the North Central Region, did come back to put a runner on third base with one out, but the Warriors' Kristen Fossell, who pitched a complete game, got a line out for the second out and finished up the game with a called strike three for her tenth strikeout of the game.
Laura Wright drove in two runs in the fourth to give WSU a 2-0 lead. After that Wilhelm blasted a two-run home run in the seventh inning to erase a 3-2 deficit and give the Warriors a 4-3 lead, but the Warriors gave up an unearned run in the last of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Both teams scored runs in the tenth and WSU then wrapped up the contest in the 12th.
Wilhelm finished the game with three hits, two runs scored and two runs driven in, while Jenny Wilmes added two hits.
Fossell scattered five hits and walked four in going the distance.
Against Missouri Western, Winona State came up with three runs in the last of the first on Bjelland's three-run home run that gave WSU the early lead, but Missouri Western eventually scored twice in the top of the seventh to secure the win.
Bjelland finished with two hits and Terra Halron collected three hits as the duo came up with five of WSU's six hits.
